Trim Levels (Exterior)
There are five different models to choose from for the 2018 Ford Explorer. The Explorer is the most basic version and begins at $32,140. The Explorer XLT begins at $34,175, while the Explorer Limited has a starting price of $42,090. The Explorer Sport begins at $45,950, while the most expensive model, the Explorer Premium, has a starting price of $53,940. Auto high beams come with the Platinum model, while they're optional in the Sport, XLT, and Limited versions. All models have a liftgate spoiler that's the same color as the body.
Engine (Power)
The Explorer and Explorer XLT come with a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V-6 engine with the option to add on a 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine. The Limited has a 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4 engine with the option to add a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V-6 engine to it. Both the Sport and Platinum come with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. As far as gas mileage goes, the Sport and Platinum get an estimated 16 miles per gallon in the city and 22 miles per gallon on the highway. The Explorer and XLT both get an estimated 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. The Limited gets an estimated 19 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway.
Performance
All models have hill start assist to prevent the vehicle from rolling down the hill when it first starts moving. The Platinum and Sport have hill descent control as well, while this is optional in the Explorer, XLT, and Limited. Trailer sway control is in all models to make it easier to tow a boat or trailer behind your vehicle. A terrain management system is found on the Sport and Platinum, which is optional in the other three models. Intelligent four-wheel drive is found in the Platinum and Sport, while this is an add-on in the XLT, Explorer, and Limited.
Interior
Manual single-zone climate control is found in the XLT and Explorer, while dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control comes with the Limited, Platinum, and Sport. A 110-volt power outlet is in the Limited and Platinum, while this can be added to the Sport. An auto-dimming rearview mirror is in the Limited, Platinum, and Sport, and can be added on to the XLT. Only the Platinum has a twin-panel moonroof, but this is optional in the Sport, XLT, and Limited. Every model has an integrated key fob.
Safety Features
Every Explorer model has an SOS post-crash alert system in addition to a Safety Canopy System to keep passengers safe in case of a crash.
